The Trump administration is pushing a reckless proposal that would allow oil drilling off Florida’s Gulf Coast where it has never been allowed before, threatening this fragile peninsula we call home.
As alarming as this proposal is, we can stop it. Our beloved beaches, fragile marine life and millions of Florida jobs depend on a healthy Gulf. That’s why Floridians have a history of bipartisan opposition to offshore oil drilling. Already, every member of Florida’s congressional delegation has written to the Trump administration in strong opposition to any oil rigs off Florida’s coast.
Trump’s drilling proposal risks another catastrophe like the 2010 BP Oil Spill Disaster that wreaked havoc on our beaches, marine life, and Florida’s coastal economy. Numerous studies have shown that the effects on human health, marine life like the bottlenose dolphin, and the Gulf itself have persisted for more than a decade.
Offshore drilling is the slowest, dirtiest and most expensive way to generate energy. And it’s not necessary with clean, affordable energy options like solar, wind and energy efficiency technology which will save consumers and businesses money today and protect our beaches, marine life, and local businesses in the future.
Thank you for speaking out against this threat.
For our coasts,
Mark and the Progress Florida team
